FAQs for vertical mill liners

Vertical mill liners are the replaceable wear components that protect the inside of a vertical grinding mill, such as a stirred media mill, a tower mill or a regrind mill. They cover the shell, the base and the zones around the agitator or screw. Because they form the wall of the grinding chamber, they also set the clearance between the agitator and the shell, which is one of the main drivers of grinding performance. Liners are consumables and are replaced on a wear cycle.

Wear life depends on ore hardness and abrasiveness, feed size, media type, slurry chemistry and how hard the mill is run, so it varies widely between sites and even between mills on one site. What matters more than the headline figure is consistency: many operations see wear life move from cycle to cycle, which makes shutdown planning difficult. Measuring your own wear rate on site, rather than working from a supplier average, is the only way to get a usable baseline. That is what a wear survey produces.

Yes. Vertical mill liner envelopes are standardised across most vertical mill designs, so ARMOUR® kits are engineered as drop-in replacements to match your existing fit envelope on both FLS and non-FLS equipment. No mechanical modification to the mill is needed, and your existing changeout routine does not change. That is what makes a like-for-like trial on a single mill practical.

ARMOUR® liners for vertical mills are engineered for fine-grinding mineral duties, with regrind the most common application. Copper and iron regrind circuits are where FLS sees the highest wear rates and the strongest case for longer liner life, followed by gold and other base metals. Lime, limestone and flue-gas duties have a different wear profile and are not part of this offering.
