Key benefits of our rotary kilns

  • Reliable, controlled pyroprocessing

The simple, heavy-duty construction and design of our kilns requires minimal maintenance while ensuring efficient performance. Shell internals are designed to optimise heat transfer, whatever the process, while mid-kiln fuel/air injection allows effective control of the reaction temperature.

  • Extended service life

A fully floating cast or forged riding ring ensures smooth operation while proprietary sleeve bearings minimise vibration and hydraulic/mechanical thrust devices maintain alignment. Shell materials are also tailored to the application to control wear. The result is lower operating stress and a rotary kiln that lasts 25 years or more.

  • Effective safety

FLS rotary kilns incorporate a range of safety features to effectively protect your people and equipment, including drive/coupling, girth gear, and support roller guards, heat shields, kiln drive roll back control and maintenance brakes, support bearing thermocouples, and kiln position indication.

FAQs for rotary kilns

A rotary kiln is a cylindrical, rotating, inclined furnace used for high-temperature processing of materials. Key components include the shell, refractory lining, support tyres (riding rings), rollers, drive gear, and internal heat exchanges.

Rotary kilns are used in the thermal treatment of ores and minerals. Common applications include calcination of bauxite to produce alumina, roasting of sulphide ores and spodumene before metal extraction, reduction of iron pellets and chromite, drying mineral ores, and regenerating activated carbon for use in gold recovery.

FLS rotary kilns can handle a wide range of materials, including alumina, bauxite, catalyst, clay, dolomite, diatomaceous earth, ferro-nickel/ferro chrome, iron ore, ilmenite, lightweight aggregate, limestone, magnesite, petroleum coke, phosphates, rare earth elements, soda ash, spodumene, trona, and vanadium salts.
