How we reduced energy, water, and maintenance requirements at a large Australian iron ore mine

By upgrading its horizontal belt filters to run on blowers and roller belt supports, a large Australian iron ore mine has seen significant savings in energy and water consumption compared to the previous vacuum pumps and air deck belt systems. It also benefits from lower maintenance downtime, allowing it to achieve higher production rates.

The mine, in the Pilbara region of Australia, previously operated with liquid ring vacuum pumps and an air deck belt support system. Compared to this traditional approach, the combination of blowers and roller belt support has achieved:

  • A 29% reduction in energy consumption.
  • A consequent 29% reduction in CO₂ emissions.
  • Water savings of 383,162 m³/year.

Roller deck systems also benefit from reduced maintenance requirements, delivering higher availability and reliability.

The mine has therefore not only improved its environmental sustainability and reduced OPEX associated with energy, water, and maintenance; it also benefits from higher uptime to increase production.
